Pace of Play

80breakr pace GPS mobile app scorecard

12 golfers on the 8th hole, Torrey North

Pace of play is a problem for golfers and golf courses.  Is there something 80BREAKR can do to help?  I’m thinking of adding an auto-pace of play monitor on the scorecard with a letter grade for pace.  But what would that accomplish?  Thursday there were 3 -4 groups on the 8th hole.  How would it have helped having pace of play monitored on the scorecard?  Perhaps the first group might pick up their pace, but for the groups 3rd up on the tee box, a pace of play monitor would not help.  There’s no action they can take to pick up the speed of play.

I’ve read several articles from the PGA on pace of play like this one, that concludes it’s important for golfers & golf courses, and adjusting tee times can help.  There’s even a USGA pace of play resource center.  It didn’t help that there was no marshal to be seen all day last Thursday.

Here’s what we’re thinking at 80BREAKR®  First, we are working on upgrading our “Beer Me” button to enable pre-payment from the beverage cart to eliminate the transaction time from slowing down play.  Secondly, perhaps have an automatic monitoring system for time with a letter grade for how it’s going right on the scorecard.  At a minimum, it might keep golfers on task during a round.  Perhaps down the line golf courses might use this data to attempt to address the issue on their end.

Perhaps on a 3.5 hour pace would garner an “A” grade, while a 4 hour pace a “B” and so on.  I’d give our 5 hour+ round on Thursday an “F”.  One of our 4-some was so frustrated, he walked off after 12 holes.  Any thoughts or suggestions from our Blog followers?  Do you think monitoring pace of play on a mobile scorecard is useful?
