Frustration Created Action
Background
A friend I met lifting weights had been talking about his golf game and how he had just started a few months earlier. I had been living in San Diego for almost 7 years, and had never played Torrey Pines. I played occasionally at Carmel Mt. Ranch, but hadn’t really tried many courses in the area, and didn’t play regularly. I had played golf for literally 45 years, starting with my grandfather when I was 4 or 5 years old. I had resigned myself to bogey golf or worse, even telling my brother “we’ll never change, how we golf is about what we can expect for the rest of our lives”
The Spark
I finally agreed to meet my friend at Torrey Pines for a round of golf. Had never looked into how to get the city card for city rates, but took care of that and met my friend on my birthday, June 12, 2012. I played my normal hacking style, good or decent shots with some inexplicably horrible shots.
My friend had a couple really embarrassing holes, and I told him to relax, enjoy the view, and we’d stop keeping his score. This is what I expected. What I did not expect, was he started having par putts and mostly shooting bogeys. How could this be? After just a couple months of starting to play, he was shooting the same scores I was shooting!! I had a lot of fun that day, in spite of my poor play, and knew we’d be playing more. My friend is rather obsessive about his passions. He was practicing daily and playing twilight almost every day. I decided I was going to improve my game. This blog details the journey, and my goal is to break 80 for a par 72 course.
