Shaking off the Rust, continued…

I hadn’t played for a few weeks and didn’t have much time to practice before playing, and wanted a different kind of practice to get my golf feel back.  It turns out what I didn’t work on to get my feel back was the main issue.  I hit some drives, hit some fringe chip shots, and some 8 foot putts the day before going out to play 18 holes.  The problem on the course was ~20 yard pitch shots, and lag putting.  Here are the results from Torrey Pines on April 7th.

A poor showing for sure, except for the 8 foot birdie putt on 13. So what happened? At the end of the round, my impression was that I had driven poorly. I only hit two fairways all day, but using the 80BREAKR™ app, the real problem was easy to see.  Let’s start by looking at detailed stats for the front nine.

Look at all the shots lost on the short game!  Not only did I use 4 shots for short-game, one on a hole I was on in regulation!  Now we can dig a little deeper into the Game Improvement section and see the details.

There you have it!  My bad shots were primarily pitch shots, lag putts, and a fringe chip thrown in for good measure.  Obviously, drives were not great, but the didn’t lead to poor scoring.  I had tried to shake off the rust of not playing with an abbreviated practice session on feel, but I should not have skipped pitching and lag putts if I was hoping to have a decent round.
